  • BP fr runners

    Hey all,

I started running 3-4 times a week for 40-60 minutes this past June and I have definitely seen huge improvements in my body and my health...my only concern is that my blood pressure has been really low lately.

My father-in-law has a machine to check since he has health problems associated with high bp, and so I've been checking my bp every few days for the past few months.  Although I have heard that runners do/can have low bp, mine has not gone over 90/68 in almost 2 weeks!  Is that normal/ok for someone who works out?

I have been getting dizzy lately at work, and I tried to give blood last week and they said I has anemic, so I'm wondering if all this has anything to do with the running...Is there something I can do/eat/drink to prevent any of this?

I don't think being anemic has anything to do with running. You just need more iron, try eating red meat or taking a supplement. I'm sure women's supplements have iron in them, women are more likely to become anemic due to the menstrual cycle :P I don't know anything about the low bp though, I'm not sure what it should be. Good luck! :)

I used to run xc, and anemia is linked to running a lot. a bunch of the girls on my team were anemic. Like the other person said, vitamins and foods with iron are good, if it gets REALLY serious, see a doctor, otherwise its not a big deal. Low blood pressure is not that big of a problem. Lance Armstrong has some of the lowest blood pressure around and he is extremely fit. Low blood pressure is way healthier then high. Make sure that you are getting enough food to eat and throughly replenishing your body with water and electrolytes after a run.

I am a nurse and the blood pressure is fine......it shows your healthy blood vessels are not clogged and are letting the blood through quite well. Anemia is something that I am often too. Vitamins usually help me.

Thanks all! I will look into a vitamin for the anemia. My main concern was the bp, so thanks for clearing that up LeShea!
