Bridal beauty part 2: a makeup trial
by A.J. Hanley
“Haphazard” is the word I’d use to describe my morning makeup routine. After leisurely sipping a latte, styling my hair, and trying on four outfits (before settling on my usual skinny jeans/blouse/ballet flats combo), I have a mere minute or two to spend on my face. And it shows! By lunchtime, my forehead is shiny, my eyeliner has migrated south, and my lip gloss is ancient history.
Since a wan pallor doesn’t exactly scream “wedding,” I decided to get some how-tos from a pro: renowned makeup artist Kimara Ahnert. Operating out of a gorgeous townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, she caters to celebs, models, real women who want a polished look, and brides-to-be. “Many makeup artists don’t want to deal with the stress and hassle of weddings,” says Ahnert, who averages 100 of these events a year. “But I love helping brides feel beautiful and even more special on their big day.”
Ahnert is all about “tailoring makeup to the bride’s style,” so our consultation began with questions about my wedding gown, venue, and color scheme, as well as my everyday routine. Then, quickly and deftly, she began applying makeup, explaining each move as we went along.
My session with Ahnert was successful (see the photos below!) and informative. I learned to make up my eyes first so I can wipe off any excess or spilled makeup without removing my foundation or concealer. Ahnert also advises skipping moisturizer on my wedding day. “It will help your makeup stay on longer and keep oily skin from becoming even oilier,” she says. Instead, I should apply a face primer directly to clean skin and follow with a liquid mineral powder foundation.
Feeling too glam to go back to work, I headed home with my step-by-step instructions and some of Ahnert's amazing products. I’ll definitely make time for makeup on the morning of my wedding—especially since I already know what I'll be wearing!
Do you have any tips for a flawless face? I’d love to hear them!
